Mastering DNS Management and Propagation

DNS is the phonebook of the internet. Learn how to manage A Records, CNAMEs, and lower your TTL for faster migrations.

Every web developer eventually has to battle with DNS (Domain Name System). Understanding how it works prevents hours of downtime during migrations.

The Power of TTL

Time To Live (TTL) dictates how long ISPs and browsers cache your DNS records. Before migrating a site, lower your TTL to 300 seconds (5 minutes). This ensures your new server IP propagates across the globe almost instantly.

CNAME vs A Records

An A Record must point to an IPv4 address. A CNAME must point to another domain name. Never put an IP address in a CNAME, and never use a CNAME for your root domain (apex).
